Barbara Haynes sold $124 for the 50/50 raffle today and Ed Oliver was the winner of $62. Ed will sell tickets next week. Wally Buschmann won 10 free tickets for next week's 50/50 drawing on September 28th.
World Service Cup
================
The donations for this month's World Service Cup will go to support efforts to address Post Polio Syndrome, which affects polio survivors many years after the initial onset of the affliction.

Happy Dollars

Barbara Woodlee shared her happiness about the 40th Anniversary of the Kennebec Community College. She shared that there will be a community celebration on campus this week end and that everyone is invited to attend.
Ed Riggs had 5 Happy Dollars for: 1) He's been involved with an organization to protect land in Utah and in conjunction with the effort to pass the Red Rock Bill in Congress, he set up and manned a booth at the Common Ground Fair over the week end and .. after dismantling the booth this morning, made it to this meeting in time! 2) They secured 150 signatures in support of the Bill; 3) Lucille sent a letter to Congressman Michaud in support of the effort. 4) Jean Ann Garrett, who likewise a letter to Congressman Michaud; and 5) for the yet to be named Rotarian present today who will volunteer to also write a letter.
Doug Carnrick shared that over the week end he and his wife recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary by travelling to NYC to take in Wicked, The Lion King, and the Yankees-Red Sox game on Saturday. Doug also shared their experience of touring the new Yankee Stadium. Finally, Doug shared with the group what a lucky man he is.
Ken Vlodek shared with the group his happiness about his 35 years of marriage prior to his wife's passing away 2 years ago. He is also very happy about being in what is going to become another long term relationship and shared some memorable family events in her that occurred recently.
Nikki Desjardins shared that she is very close to a family in the area which she has known since childhood and that her friend's father is experiencing some significant health problems. A dinner is being held at the Calumet Club to raise funds to assist the family with medical expenses and she has tickets available for those wishing to attend.
Peter Garrett, shared that he entered his vegetables into competition at the Common Ground Fair over the week end and, in spite of the challenges of the growing season this year, managed to secure a First Place Ribbon! Congrats, Peter!!
Don Plourde shared that over the week end he got a frantic call from his wife at Sugarloaf who found a bat in the house when she moved some furniture. Since don was working and couldn't leave, he suggested that she call Gary Hammond, who was on his way up there. Unable to get him on a good cell phone connection, she went out on the road and flagged him down to help with the intruder. Gary took care of the bat, which was dead, and saved the day.... Chivalry is still alive in Central Maine!
Janet Parkhurst shared her experience last week end having travelled to Denver, CO for the Annual Brew fest, which is one of the top events of its kind in the country. She also had a chance to see friends and partake in another smaller event later in the week end.
Sarah Sugden had 3 Happy Dollars for 1) during the first year of her daughter's life, they acquired a large collection of baby clothes. Sarah was happy to report that the several boxes of these clothes are now at her sister's house and that she won't be needing them again ..... ever; 2) At the Colby Craft Fair over the week end, many people from away stopped by the Library Booth and shared their fond experiences visiting Waterville over the years. Several wrote some love notes to Waterville, some of which Sarah read to the Club. Sarah will make them available to anyone wishing to see them; and 3) the photographic montage of Waterville that is currently on display at Barrel's Market on Main Street.
Announcements:

Patti Newmen announced that the Colby Rotaract club is starting up again this Fall and that about a dozen students appear to be very interested in their efforts. Patti indicated that they are looking for projects and asked the membership to forward any suggestions to her as they want to be able to capture the energy of this group from the start.
Tim Beals announced that there will be an Auction Committee meeting after the Club meeting today. He noted that there are over 60 Auction Slips without an "owner" and encouraged those with only a few to take a couple of more. He also suggested that his would be a good opportunity for new members to become involved as well. Finally, Tim noted that all slips are due in by October 19th. This will give the Committee time to organize the bid items and prepare the ad for the Sentinel.
Suzanne Uhl-Melanson spoke briefly about the Foundation Committee and provided a brief history of the Rotary Foundation, tracing its roots from its founding in 1917 with an initial donation of $26; through its initial growth in the 1920's and its support of an organization that eventually became Easter Seals; and the exponential growth that occurred after World War II. She recounted the many projects the Foundation has been involved with over the years, including the current effort in support of eradicating polio from the world's population.
She and Lou Smith then described this year's effort to get the membership close to the EREY goal of $100/member. Specifically, each member received today 10 small envelopes with labels, which they are encouraged to use for their loose change over the year. On a periodic basis (monthly is suggested) those wishing to participate can bring the envelopes to the noontime meeting and the amounts will be credited towards the $100 goal. Suzanne and Lou are available if there are any questions or additional envelopes needed.
