50/50 Tickets

Don Plourde sold $78 for the 50/50 raffle today and John Fortier was the winner of $39. John will sell tickets on February 22nd.. Lucille Zelenkewich won 10 free tickets for next meeting's 50/50 drawing.
World Service Cup
================
The beneficiary of the donations for this month's World Service Cup will be the domestic violence reading program for schools that the Club is sponsoring materials for.

Nikki Desjardins had her picture in the paper and was fined $5.
Cell Phones

A $10.00 fee for cell phone ringing continues for the 2008-2009 Club year. No fines assessed today.

Happy Dollars
===========
Ally shared that her niece, a student at Cony High School is leaving soon for Guatemala City to work on the safe Passage program and is hoping she will be able to do a presentation for us at some point in the future.
Suzanne Uhl-Melanson had a Happy Dollar for the even celebrating the opening of the Quarry Road Recreational Area. There were over 200 participants from 24 communities attending. Suzanne encouraged everyone to get over there soon to experience this new addition to our community.
Peter Garrett had a sad dollar for those who travelled to Sugarloaf this week end and missed the Quarry Road opening.
Gary Hammond is happy about a 4 day snowmobile ride he took recently with several of his friends over the week end.
Sue Guigere is happy that her daughter Kat will be having a new baby in August.
Kim Lindlof was happy about the performance of Nunsensations that she attended over the week end. She is also very happy that this is such a great community resource that we have such a high level of talent in our community. She encouraged everyone to see this production this week end.
Charlie Gaunce had a happy dollar for the fun he and his family had with Anita Diaz, our exchange student who spoke to the club several weeks ago. He was pleased to report that at the end of the day, they had her paralleling. Unfortunately due to an errant kidney stone, Charlie couldn't participate and is looking forward to another visit before the end of the season.
Eric, from Eric's was happy to share that he turned 50 over the week end.
Sarah Sugden was happy about several things:1) about Happy Dollars which forces her to look at what's good that's going on in her life; 2) the Happy Hour that we had last week; 3) a friend from college who is New Orleans who she recently re-connected with; 4) for her co-workers at the library and in particular, those who are pursuing careers in library science.

Cathy reported that 37 members have 20 days to get their dues in before the late payment penalty goes into effect.
There will be a Foundation Committee meeting after we adjourn.
Kim Lindlof shared there will be an information session at the Chamber Board Room on 2/22/2010 at 4PM.
Lucille Zelenkewich announced that there will be a Club Administration Meeting after we adjourn.
Sarah shared that the clubs in our Zone in District 7790 (Sunrise, Unity, and Hallowell) us going to be undertaking a Zone project to raise funds to support polio eradication. More information will be coming soon.
Nikki Desjardins shared that 50% of the deaths in maine last year were related to domestic violence and urged the membership to think about this as we work to change the community.
Sarah reminded the club that next week is President's Day and there will be no meeting.

Today's Program: The L. C. Bates Museum and Arboretum (Deb Staber, Curator of the L.C. Bates Museum)
Deb Saber, the Executive Director of the L.C. Bates Museum presented remarks to the club regarding the museum and the challenges it is facing. She provided a brief history of the museum, as well as the Good Will-Hinckley School, which was founded in 1920 for the purpose of providing a education to local children and the community. Questions:
1. There's a growing disconnect between kids and the wilderness? How are you addressing this? They find that by creating opportunities to get kids out into the arboretum, they are raising the interest of kids in the outdoors.
2. Can you discuss the back pack program? The backpacks which kids use when they go hiking on the trails include activity cards and information about what they will see and experience on their hikes. In response to a question about wheter they need more back packs, Ms. Staber indicated yes.
3. What is you Operating Budget? Total Budget - $69,000; Heat and Lights- $26,000; Staff-$42,000.
4. What do you charge? $2.50 for Adults, $1.00 for children; Program fees vary by program.
After herpresentation, Sarah presented Deb with a certificate noting that 6 children will receive polio vaccinations in hername as a token of appreciation and with the thanks and best wishes of the Club.
