Today's Program: Blogs and Social Media for Maine Businesses (Marc Pitman)

============================================================================

Today's speaker was our own Marc Pitman, presenting the following PowerPoint presentation on Social Media (that's websites such as Google, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc. for those of us who are new to this.)

Please view the PowerPoint presentation following these written comments. Address any questions you may have to Marc Pitman .

Marc opened with a brief history of internet marketing, using Amazon.com as an example, and progressing to the growth of adding individual content (note the Mainely Brews pages) and interactivity applications.

Marc's YouTube search for "realtor 04901" shows how realtors are now using YouTube as one more tool to sell houses.

Skittles invites visitors to www.skittles.com to view other social networks for product comments posted by their consumers.

Social networking sites are the new water cooler: it's where today's exchange of ideas and opinions are happening.

Marc recommends NOT purchasing email lists.

Creating your personal Google profile is a great starting point to using social media as a marketing and selling tool. The price is right. Keep in mind that the internet remembers. Even old comments and reviews, positive or negative, remain on the web.

Marc suggests emailing your newsletter to keep communications flowing. You'll use a double opt-in. Interested viewers will first respond to your online offer to receive the newsletter; you can then ask them to reconfirm their interest in receiving your newsletter by way of documentation of their interest.

Consider frequency carefully. Viewers like fresh content. How much time can you devote to updates?

Start a blog.

This presentation has triggered a high volume of positive comments from Rotarians to Board members. Great job, Marc!

Ally then presented Marc with a Four-Way Test Key Chain as a token of our appreciation. The next meeting will be on Monday, May 11 at the Hathaway Creative CenterCenter.
