The Maine Rail Group: extending passenger rail service to Augusta, Waterville, and Bangor

The Maine Rail Group is continuing its effort to actively support a bill to be submitted to the 130th Legislative session calling for a feasibility study to extend passenger rail service to Augusta, Waterville, and  Bangor, in coordination with Downeaster operations and other passenger rail initiatives in Maine.  Senator Joe Baldacci is sponsoring the bill and is gathering legislators in the greater Bangor area to serve as co-sponsors. MRG is also reaching out to several legislators in the Augusta / Waterville area.

We are advocating that the bill be introduced this month to authorize $300,000 to fund this study, including funds from the involved communities and our own organization. We believe passenger rail service extending from Brunswick to Bangor is a strategic investment in Maine’s future, and recognize it cannot be achieved without the active support of community organizations and local businesses.
